Vertical addition and subtraction #practicezone

Warm up:

Build it Up
https://nrich.maths.org/10592

Learning intention:

Attitudes – great sportsmanship
Skills – collaborating, reasoning
Knowledge – estimating and calculating addition and subtraction equations

Success criteria:

  • Today we are in the practice zone, we are revising the efficient strategy of vertical addition/subtraction whilst playing a Maths game.
  • We have shown great sportsmanship whilst collaborating, knowing that learning is more important than winning.
  • We have exercised our reasoning muscle by thinking about the numbers logically before deciding which cell to put the digit it.
  • Before calculating the equations, we estimated what the answers would be. Estimation is an important Maths skill to develop as it is a skill for life. (https://www.mathsisfun.com/numbers/estimation.html

Dicey Addition
Find a partner and a 0-9 dice.
Each of you draw an addition grid.
Take turns to throw the dice 4 times. After each throw of the dice, you each decide which of your cells to put that number in. Whoever has the sum closer to 100 wins, estimate the answer before calculating.
Extension: How can you make this game more challenging? (e.g. adding larger numbers, adding decimals, etc.)

How can we alter this addition game to make it a game to practice subtraction?
As a class, discuss the above question. Create a game with your partner to play to practise subtraction.

Reflection: This learning is portfolio evidence. Can you identify which goals you have collected evidence for? I can sign these goals throughout and at the end of the lesson.
